Dr. Peets’ Teaching Tip of the Week

As we move towards Parent Teacher Conferences this week, I wanted to share some helpful hints:

  • Prepare: Prepare ahead of time and make notes about each student.

  • Be on time: Arrive on time so you don't miss the conference.

  • Start positively: Begin and end the conference with a compliment or positive anecdote about the student.

  • Listen actively: Let parents do most of the talking and use non-verbal cues to show you're engaged.

  • Ask questions: Ask parents if they have questions at least twice during the meeting.

  • Create a collaborative atmosphere: Ask parents about their observations at home and how they envision moving forward.

  • Address concerns with empathy: Address concerns with empathy and reflect back on what parents say to show you understand.

  • Collaborate on action plans: Collaborate on action plans and communicate regularly.

  • Follow up: Follow up with parents and continue to engage with them.

  • Meet with both parents: If possible, meet with both parents so they both get to know the teacher and hear concerns from both parents.

TCI Tip of the Week from Ange

Four questions for Self-Awareness to ask yourself in a crisis situation are:

  • What am I feeling now?

  • What does the student feel, need, expect, or want?

  • How is the environment affecting the situation?

  • How do I best respond?
